The Two Gentlemen of Verona

William Shakespeare

CONTRATAR

Sinopsis

If Shakespeare is one of the builders of the modern human soul, as Harold Bloom argues, in The Two Gentlemen of Verona he will begin to develop many of the elements that will define this conception of the human being.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of the first comedies in which he refines the tensions between friendship and love, tensions that occupied no small space in the literature of the late Renaissance.

Friendship understood as a sexless form of love was being treated from many perspectives and extolled as a form of high sentimental commitment as opposed to amorous relationships.

Written shortly before Romeo and Juliet, it shares many points of view and dramatic tension with this previous play.

It is also one of the most emblematic creations of the character of the comic servant, who will generate a model that will later nourish both the Bard’s theatre and that of his followers.

Co-produced by CNTC  (Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico), LAZONA and Cheek by Jowl.

Reviews

La Nueva España - "Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod's co-production garners applause, laughter and admiration”.

La Razón  - “Declan Donnellan offers a performance that is pure theatrical play in which he has generated a highly original code in which poetic elevation and the most ridiculous prosaism converge in a harmonious way.”

El Confidencial - “The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of the best theatrical proposals that can be enjoyed these days in the capital. It is entertaining, witty and very cheerful. And what's more, it's done without tricks or traps.”

EL PAÍS  - “...The set, very well choreographed, revolves around a fixed panel that performs the same function as the sail stretched from side to side on the stages where Lope de Rueda performed his steps.”

Time Out  - “The staging is clean and precise, the story, despite the tangle, is perfectly understandable and easy to follow, and the original text has been well pruned. If there is one thing that stands out above all else, it is the work of the actors.”

Teatro Madrid  - “If you ask me... Declan's work is magnificent. He reflects with the colours of love (fraternal, paternal, sexual) and desire, using a group of actors who are so very, very right and brilliant, that they turn the show into a real PARTY! A MUST SEE.”

Huffington Post  - “If there is anyone who knows how to set a Bard's text for the times, it is Declan Donellan.”

ABC Cultural - “'The two gentlemen of Verona': the triumph of comedy. It is a pleasure to see this display of wit, of freshness, of humour, of how to make humour a powerful weapon.”
